I am delighted to be part of the Ramsey staff and to teach 8th grade English Language Arts. Writing and reading are two of my biggest passions and I love to share those with students and families.
I grew up primarily in Princeton, New Jersey, and Boston, Massachusetts, though have also lived in Rome, Italy, and in many places on the east coast. I attended the University of Iowa where I majored in English. Since my graduation in 1992 I have called Minneapolis home. I worked in advertising and public relations for a few years before pursuing my Masters in Education at the University of Minnesota.
My teaching career began with a one-year stint as a media specialist at Lyndale. From there I moved to Field Community School, where I taught for 16 years, mostly in 7th and 8th grade language arts. I joined Ramsey in the fall of 2013. I love teaching middle school ELA because I love the passion young teens have. I love to help students explore ideas, solidify their opinions, and communicate their ideas with the world. We do this through daily reading, writing and critical thinking activities that will entertain us, delight us, challenge us, and maybe even frustrate us at any given time. My goal is for students to move on with the skills and confidence they need to be successful in their future endeavors both in and out of school.
When not at school I enjoy spending time with friends and in the outdoors. Most weekends my dog and I can be found hiking while I listen to audiobooks. (For audiobook fans, the best "read" I've found for young people is the Peter and the Starcatcher series, written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson and read by Jim Dale. For adults, two of my favorite reads are Code Talker: Memoir of a WWII Navajo Marine by Chester Nez, and Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base by Annie Jacobsen.) My favorite genre is non-scary mysteries.
