Ramsey Middle School is committed to addressing the needs of the whole child while building a positive school culture for students, families and staff.  

Positive Behavior Support
Ramsey Middle School is striving to implement the principles of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). PBIS is an application of a behaviorally-based, systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that link research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs.

Social Contract
At the beginning of the year, advisors facilitate a discussion about which school-wide guidelines to include why certain guidelines are needed. The values-centered discussions about equity, control, independence, community, and management enables teachers and students to explore how and why communities establish guidelines in the first place. We then use an affinity process to create a set of recommended school rules, which are then voted on by the entire school. The result is a social contract that is signed by every adult and child. The job of the student is to follow the contract and the job of the adult is to rigorously uphold the rules of the contract.

Developmental Designs
We use the Developmental Designs framework to support high academic achievement for middle-level students by integrating a social-emotional approach that meets their needs and academic instruction that truly engages them.

Pathways to Self Control
The RMS pathways to self-control are: modeling, reinforcing, reminding, redirecting, Take a Break, and Buddy Room. When the Social Contract is broken, teachers have strategies to repair it, such as redirection, fix its, loss of privilege, and taking breaks. Social skills grow without loss of dignity.

Circle of Power and Respect, or "CPR" as it’s commonly called, is the middle school version of Morning Meeting. We use CPR during our daily advisory. The four components of the meeting are the same as in younger grades: Greeting, Sharing, Group Activity, and News and Announcements. But the emphasis and many of the details in each of these components reflect the unique needs of middle school students and the structure of their school day. CPR offers middle-school-age children stability during a period in their lives dominated by tumultuous change. It also allows them to do what they most want and need to do: connect with their peers.

Second Step
Advisors at Ramsey teach a district-wide social skills curriculum called Second Step. Most students at Ramsey have been at schools where Second Step was also used in elementary school. Second Step lessons focus on empathy, impulse control, and problem solving. Lessons are sequential, developmentally appropriate, and provide opportunities for modeling, practice, and skills reinforcement. The curriculum includes discussion, teacher modeling, coaching skills, and role plays. Second Step supports our philosophy of explicitly teaching pro-social skills that are needed to navigate middle school.
